This 5th grade student is a shining star on the ice as she shows the results of her endless hard work and dedication to her sport. She earned a first place for this performance at her most recent competition. This talented athlete started taking ice skating classes at the age of four, and is now competitively skating while she takes classes 6 days a week. During the school week, she actually takes classes for 90 minutes each morning before the start of her school day!
That's dedication!

Grade 3- Wantagh Elementary
I have been taking drum lessons for a little over a year. I started drumming when I was very young, using anything I could (even drumming on our couch). I am working on my 9th song, "Learn to Fly" by the Foo Fighters. This song is very hard because there is an open high hat on every 3 and a half beats. It's also challenging because the tempo is very fast. My drums teacher,Tommy, said that I am the youngest student who has ever worked on this song.

This is my stuffed animal named Destiny. This is a film about her watching TV and changing the channels. She gets sad and scared. Then she shuts the TV off and calls it a night. I made this video one night in my kitchen and I had a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun making this. I love to change the themes and enjoy seeing what happens.

My friend and I were in my basement on Halloween night. It was too late to go back out, so we decided to make something. I had just showed him a machine I made. He said we could make a car with the motor. We took the motor off and got the supplies we needed. First we had to make a base so we took a small piece of cardboard. We taped the motor to the cardboard. He said we needed to make an axle to make both wheels move with one motor. I got a straw and cut it then I got a lollipop stick and put the stick into the straw. We put a rubber band around the part of the motor that actually moves. Then I put the rubber band around the axle. We started the motor but it still didn’t move. Our next approach was to have it just go in circles. We stuck the wheel into the motor. When we turned the motor on it worked! I wanted it to go faster. I got better motors and soldered wires on. It was challenging to put the motor in a spot where it wouldn’t hit the ground but the wheels would. After that I put bigger batteries on. The base caved in. Next I put the whole entire thing on a wood surface. The batteries didn’t make the wood cave in. It was really fun making a car of my own. I hope I can make more machines.

I am a ten year old girl who loves to play and create, so I combine both of my hobbies and make stop motion animation with my tablet and 18’ dolls at home! To make these videos, I use my iPad and download the app, "Stopmotion Studio”. Then, I open up the app and begin taking pictures of my dolls. I usually take about 300 to 700 pictures for each 2 to 3 minute video. To get the smoothest stop motion, I only make slight movements in each picture. If you make bigger movements in each picture, your final result will be choppy and overall not smooth. Once I am done taking pictures, I will edit the video. I will delete pictures, hold pictures for a little longer or a little shorter and maybe, even take more pictures. Finally, I add music and voices. I usually use free audio or theme music from the app. When doing voiceover, try,try again! It usually takes me up to 10 voice overs to get it perfect. I don’t have a written script, but I know what I want to say. Then, if I want to, any special effects will be added. It's so much fun! You should try it too!

I went to the Maker Fair and saw a homemade go-kart race. I told my Dad that I wanted to build one. So we did! I drew up a plan and found the parts we needed. I used the motor, seat and part of the frame from my sister's old Barbie motorcycle. I used old hockey sticks and made a frame. I used a metal pipe for steering. I tried the go-kart and made corrections. I tried it again and it was perfect. It was really fun riding and building my go-kart.
